Thanksgiving Day fun

Believing the invented
Answers true, the players
Laughed; the next one
Drew a card with
Even crazier clues,
Read the nonsense,
Declared the points,
Started to
Hoot on the didgeridoo.

Let's talk...

The Meleagris gallopavo is
Usually present this day,
Roasted, maybe stuffed,
Kind of displayed at the
Epicenter of the family feast with
Yams, green beans, and pumpkin treats.

Maritime warning

Finding their way
Out on the water when thick,
Grey mist rolls in,
Harbor boats are
Regular warnings;
Not to hear them is grim.

The San Juan

Underwater, a crew of 44
Menacing conditions;
Atlantic storms
Render rescue a nearly
Impossible mission.
Nonetheless the world hopes the plan
Eventually comes to fruition.

In honor of, and with heartfelt thoughts for the crew of the Argentine submarine San Juan.

She sees no

Not thinking straight, she
Decides to
End the pain.
No one understands.
Too late.

Speaking out

Hear this passionate,
Anxious cry to
Remedy such
An ancient injustice;
See the good in
Seeking parity,
Mindful of
Natural right
To dignity and fairness.

For many years I have thought the book The Chalice and the Blade by Riane Eisler should be required high school reading. We have witnessed in the past weeks the beginning of a shift to accountability among those who have long believed they have a natural right to dominate and intimidate half of our society. The cycle of this behavior can be broken. It takes courage and determination. Power is the tool of insecure people. Compassion will ultimately rule.

Street beat

Ballads sung by
Uncouth tongues
Served a purpose long ago;
Know that now, on corners
In towns, musicians play,
Nodding their heads in
Grateful glow.

It's got pluck!

Begging folks to shuffle their feet
And slap their knees, the music is
Nigh to a tangy twang; they
Jig to the beat of those wire strings.
Oh, just hear that instrument sing!

Heard the group Kuinka perform at North Olympic Library Port Angeles. They played other wonderful instruments as well, and in innovative ways. Inspiring!

Pure country

Hootenanny music, full
Of celebration, always
Evokes a
Down-home feel, slappin’ knees
Or stompin’ heels,
With a cry of “Yee-haw!” It’s just
Natural elation!

Inspired by Family Night fun at Roosevelt Elementary School. The staff sure know how to help all families feel a part of the school community.

Follow the track

Listen, then observe
Every impression, for
A path is forming towards
Real comprehension;
Naturally, there is more and more…

It fascinates me that the Old English word leornian, meaning to gain knowledge, to think about, goes back to a sense of finding a track and following it. This comes from the PIE root *leis- (1) “track or furrow.” The related Old English word læst means “sole.” Soles and souls make impressions.

Unbridled strength try to

A side has lost, the other won; for
Recreation, it’s all been fun.
