Countdown

Lingering until the end,
An old December day has
Seen the final flickers of
Two thousand fifteen.

Swell

Blow glass, throw clay
Or carve a
Wooden one; they all are
Lovely, honorable, handy, and
Such fun.

Suspended animation?

Cheers to those years we
Had together as siblings
In our
Large family. We played and
Dreamed, but
Had no voice, no way to wonder
Out loud without
Offense; those distant
Days fed imaginations, held us in suspense.

Needle and thread

Stitches going
Every which way; what
Will be our project today?

Driven

Dreams or snow, they sometimes
Ride before the
Invisible
Force of a more
Truculent nature.

Midnight lunch

On silent
Wings they
Launch into the night,
Soundlessly grabbing a little bite.

Handed down...

The annual
Replication of
A recipe, story, or
Decoration
Is sometimes a
Timeless
Indication of familial
Obligation, though each
New year might bring an unfamiliar
Song to sing.

Ripe moment

Seizing the day to
Enjoy
Another change, we
Sprinkle
On a little spice, sowing
New seeing-ways.

All those

Please

Nod thanks to all the
Gracious trees.

Please

Singular, momentous
Event called
Now; it is
The best gift ever.

Melodious mirth,
Even when short-lived,
Rejuvenates earthly souls
Ready for ever-spinning
Yin yang.

Winks in an

Night sky are tickly
Kisses for a
Little one’s
Eyes.

Brrr...

Freezing
Rapidly, winter’s
Icy
Grasp
Induces
Dread.

This photo is three years old. While the temperature is nowhere near this, the weather has suddenly turned cold.

Sound appeal

Beautiful bongs
Echo through the night;
Lively tintinnabulation
Lifts the
Spirits, ward off fright.

...or one might hear it with these sentiments:

Celebrate

Soulfully the voice expresses
In varied frequencies the
Never ending human choice of
Good will and harmony.

âme

Medieval intonation, words flow
Out of singing mouths,
Take the air and
Elevate it from mere breath back
To the cosmic soul.

The home stretch...

You focus
On mind and body, a relaxing sensation,
Guided by deep breathing
And meditation.

'Tis the season...

Orbs of
Red and silver stars – just to
Name a few –
Are
Merry
Embellishments that
Number among the clues about
The season upon us that
Started in October; are we confused?

Lexiconically speaking...

Definitely
Indulging the
Curious mind, in
This
Invaluable treasure,
Of course, you will find
Nouns, verbs, etc. in
ABC order; it
Renders pleasure for the
Yen of word-hoarders.

Cheerful

Psychologically speaking, almost
One hundred years ago, people
Started regarding
It as
That which is constructive or good;
It earlier meant an agreement placed, from the Latin
Verb ponere traced. In attitude, it’s healthy to
Embrace.

PIE dough?

Fashioning fanciful fabrications
In time and place with
Characters planning
Their machinations
Is how writers live in
Others’ lives; they knead the
Numerous iterations.

A Ukrainian folktale, The…

Many months
In frigid places,
Tingly fingers are
Tucked in cozy spaces; if one is
Ever lost in the snow,
Nature friends will find a warm home.

Homage to the iPage

Beechwood tablets
On which were cut runes, soon branched
Out with
Karmic leaves, filling volumes in gnostic
Spaces like monasteries and libraries.

Baking traditions

Confections that induce reflections
On a certain time
Of year
Kindle noses and tickle taste buds, often
In big doses, always in good cheer. We
Enjoy and share these
Special memories with family far and near.

Warming up the oven…

Shine

Chemiluminescence is the blue part of
A flame; there it waxes poetic as if sad about its
Name. But, be of good cheer and
Don’t despair, for there you’ll find, no doubt,
Light and hope and coziness when the
Electricity is out.

Arms crossed in PA

Pennsylvania is the
Respected center of this
Edible, bready loop.
The form has inspired
Zany songs, beach attire,
Even dance steps, and more; I
Love them with ice cream or soup.

Joy vitality = joviality

Musicians,
In their merriment
Ring bells, beat drums,
Toot flutes, string strums, then ask where Old King
Harry went.

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

It's no joke...

Sleety, then flakey, December’s
Not faking; this cold time
Of year makes it crystalline clear that the
Weather is changing. Oh dear!

Number 626

In her
Nonpareil and subtle way, she
Immediately
Made a positive
Impression on
The student
Association; soon they voted her to
Be their media
Leader – unanimously. A dynamic soul, in the
End, she agreed.

This and that

This definite article, now gender-free, does it
Help one
Embrace English more readily?

Bouncing back

Resist that
Ever present urge to
Slip
Into the
Lure of defeat.
Insist that your worth, your
Enterprising
Nature will favorably
Compete with any dare;
Engage in repair.

Of supply and demand, the

Deftly command.

'Papa' in Quechua

Pulled from the soil, these
Oblong
Treasures originated in the
Andes. Around
The world they were cultivated –
Over 5,000 kinds now
Exist – and the hope is that
Starvation will not persist.

When one of my daughters was three years old, she watched our older neighbors as they knelt next to a long mound of earth, digging into it with their gloved hands. “What are you finding?” she asked. They were harvesting red potatoes. Imagine her delight.

Fullness Eve

Maria-pocked, this magnetic
Orb circles the earth, stirring
Oceans and all creation while
Nurturing our imagination.

Monday, November 23, 2015

Tag! You're...

Imagine the world without
This third person pronoun.

Sunday, November 22, 2015

A moment caught

Memories of those we held so dear
In time might fade, but
Seeing again their innocent eyes can
Start a stream of tears.

For Glorya

Pull-push

Sliding tubes, some pitched at
A, were played in
Ceremonies and for
Kings. Formed in
Brass, these
Ur-trombones gave
Troubadours a courtly zing!

Unseen

Pecuniary deprivation, the blatant
Opposite of wealth, is
Variously detrimental to
Everybody’s health. Don’t we
Really need to see
That injustice in this world of greed says
Yes! to social inequality?

See the bird...

Along
Walks an auk that
Keenly gawks in completely the
Wrong direction; its
Addled webbed feet find a
Riveting treat, which it gobbles without
Detection.

Deep

Relating to forms
Of long ago
Or nourishing strands underground,
They all give us words, earth-bound ancestry, and a
Sense of source that’s profound.

Kling

Lompe er den ikke egentlig;
Ellers kalles den flatbrød.
Flott med sukker,
Smør, og kanel, den
Er deilig til kaffen.

Gratulerer med dagen, Tove C.!

Mad brand

Ferociously
Ardent,
Not to be swayed, the
Arrogant faithful strike
Terror
In
Cities,
Insanely
Serving an invisible
Master.

One point of view

Having a lot
Of busy tasks offen
Makes me krazy.
Even tho’ I luv to learn,
Why, if a subject’s not hazey
Or doesn’t need lotz more
Review, do I hafta
Keep on thinking? ’Cuz if I don’t do it I’m scrooed!

When in Rome...

Hearty and loved by young and
Old, this Minnesotan casserole
Takes protein, starch, and frozen beans –
Determined to still look green – and
Infuses it all with creamy canned
Soup; it’s always a
Hit, a Midwestern coup.

Inspired by attendance at a potluck.

Remembering

A song of
National fervor with
Thanks we sing today in
Honor of those who have
Encountered the worst side of
Man— to them respect we pay.

Hand-wringing

What if? What then? can
Obfuscate
Reality, abscond with
Rationality, so what remains for
You in the knowing now?

Monday, November 9, 2015

h2o

Wet, misty, or frozen
And hot, tepid, or cold, without
This crucial
Element our
Reality on earth would fold.

Elemental

All around us, mostly unseen,
Is an ocean of molecules in some
Regions still clean.

Saturday, November 7, 2015

Preserve, pickle, season

Chili sauce, ketchup,
Or mayonnaise, just to
Name a few, will add
Delight to any dish,
If that’s what you wish to do.
Mustard, pesto,
Even tzatziki– and do
Not forget the soy– will
Tantalize your taste buds,
So try something new and enjoy!

With thanks to Kathleen, at Love From Minnesota, for the inspiration.

Present

Beautiful friends
Remember when
On weekend nights
We’d make chocolatey
Nuggets, delightedly
Indulging in
Endless laughter, and
Saving some for times thereafter.

Thanks for the inspiration, K., L., and S.

Wonder

Wandering through the woods
Every day, I
Reach
Into my curious mind and
Find that
Ever-present urge to
Search for
Treasures not
Easily gained or understood; the
Riddling trees wave limbs
In jest, revealing it
All to be one big quest.

Thank you, Helene C.

Fun flies when you’re having time!

Wild, whimsical
Organizing of
Random
Daily thoughts
Ping pong, zigzag,
Lollygag until they wind up – POP! –
As acrostics.
Yippee, hurray for each new day!

Cryptic

Abstruse language,
Recondite words
Contrive
A mystery, sometimes absurd, the secret
Never to be revealed, the facts of the matter
Ever concealed.

Leafing through the book of seasons

Life gone, but colorful, they
Elegantly drift down in
Autumn,
Veritable whispers of
Eventual
Spring.

Crucial exercise

This amazing mental imperative
Has remarkable gifts to give;
It can warm both mind and soul–
Naturally, two parts of a vibrant whole–
Kindling the energy it takes to live.

Bad breath

Mouth, a ghastly gaping gullet, opens to
A slimy well; the voracious, bony
Wendigo, untroubled by it, really smells!

Grasshopper's teacher

Playfully the maven
Unstuck the young man’s mind,
Not by telling him what to
Do, but by guiding him to opine
In matters he knew thoroughly,
To speak his thoughts more mindfully.

Hearth

Focusing on this
Intrinsic element, we
Respect its
Energy, we revere its light.

You say tomato; I say tomate

Cousin words
Of different familias

Naturally looking
Alike;
Their similar sounds
Enhance memorabilia and
So we have the German Wort ‘gleich.’

L’Chaim!

One’s positive growth and
Longevity might well
Depend on nutrition and levity.

The word ‘old’ is among the oldest words, termed ‘ultraconserved’ words, shared by four of seven language families.
