Ancient CPAs

When I was considering a word for the ‘q’ line, I came upon ‘quipu,’ which seemed perfect for a poem about sequence. ‘Kipu’ is the Quechua (KECH-wah) spelling of the word. Poetry is about sound, so here are the pronunciations of words in order of appearance: KEE-poos, HOKH, EES-kai, KEEN-sah, wah-RAHN-kah.

Six or seven Inca people
Encoded their accounts on
Quipus. Huq, iskay, kinsa,
Up until perhaps waranqa;
Every colored knot meant something.
Never think they were not
Clever, those ancient folks, in their
Endeavors.
