When I hear the Gnostic Gospels
referred to as heretical text, I cringe at the power of one group of men to
dictate to all people how to be and to think. The word ‘heresy’ traces back to
a Greek verb meaning “to take or grasp.” Those who chose to espouse a body of
knowledge different from the early Christians were labeled heretics, the word
thus taking on an ominous meaning. Shouldn’t knowledge be a personal choice?
